IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOUR PROFESSIONAL SELF. . .
To be more of a team player. I work on intuition a lot and I’m not comfortable having to explain and justify my decisions because they are often made intuitively with no logical forethought. I guess that’s why I’ve been my own boss most of my professional life.

WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO AUTHOR THE 2007 TEXT, THE PUMP BOOK ?
I was asked to write a monthly column on groundwater pumping for an industry magazine. Several contractors began using my articles as training for their technicians and asked me to gather the columns into a book. In three weeks, I turned the column spanning 10 years into The Pump Book.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST SATISFYING PART OF SEEING THE BOOK REMAIN POPULAR?
I love knowing that my book may be raising the level of knowledge and thus professionalism among the pump installers in this country. (Learn more about the book here).

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE LATEST ADVANCEMENTS IN PUMP TECHNOLOGY?
I think the incorporation of electronics into our pump control systems is fantastic. From the use of VFDs in constant pressure systems, to control systems that use smartphones for the interface, to communication devices that allow a contractor to monitor and control an irrigation system from anywhere in the world.

FAVORITE MEMORIES FROM SERVING ON THE NGWA MANUFACTURERS SECTION BOARD OF DIRECTORS FROM 1992-1996?
Both my wife Jerilyn and I have fond memories of our first trip to New Orleans, compliments of the Association. It was at that meeting that my business partner, Bob Dutkiewicz, and I began the manufacturer’s representative division of the Manufacturers Section.

WHAT HAS ALWAYS FASCINATED YOU MOST ABOUT A GROUNDWATER PUMPING SYSTEM?
How reliable the equipment is. I’ve seen 20-yearold pumps pulled out of the ground, checked out, and put right back in the hole because they were still performing perfectly. The manufacturers in this industry make excellent products.
