Scott Pruitt Confirmed as EPA Administrator

The U.S. Senate confirmed Scott Pruitt to lead the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency by a largely party line vote of 52-46.

Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine voted against Pruitt while Democratic Senators Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota voted in support of his nomination.

In an address to EPA, Pruitt tried to reassure EPA staff he is committed to the mission of the agency, despite previous statements he would like to eliminate the agency. He also used the address to reinforce his views on regulation and federalism, stressing his point of view that states should take the lead on environmental regulations.

The EPA handles several NGWA issues in the regulatory area. From drinking water to managed aquifer recharge, Pruitt’s confirmation will likely have a range of impacts to NGWA members and priorities.
