The Young Water Professionals group of the Oklahoma Ground Water Association collaborated with Associated Environmental Industries (AEI) on June 26 to host the group’s first hands-on field event of the year at the AEI ranch in Purcell, Oklahoma.

The inaugural Young Professionals Field Day brought together students and early-career professionals for a day of practical learning, networking, and environmental field experience. The goal of the event was to bridge the gap between classroom instruction and real-world application, where participants were introduced to the process of environmental site characterization. Throughout the day, attendees rotated through interactive demonstrations led by environmental professionals, gaining firsthand exposure to the tools, techniques, and technologies used in the field.

Participants observed live drilling demonstrations, examined cores and other environmental samples, explored well construction materials, and learned how environmental professionals collect and interpret field data. The program also featured a breakfast networking session and a “Characterize Before You Remediate” Lunch and Learn presentation. Throughout the day, participants engaged directly with experienced geologists, hydrogeologists, engineers, and environmental consultants, where participants could ask questions, discuss career paths, and build professional connections.

The success of the inaugural event reflects the commitment of the groundwater industry in supporting the next generation of environmental and water professionals through mentorship, education, and hands-on experience.

The Young Water Professionals group is led by President Lauren Haygood and Vice President Mason Martinez, with support from OGWA Director Katy Anderson and the OGWA Board of Directors. Building on the success of this inaugural event, the Young Water Professionals group looks forward to expanding future programming and continuing to partner with industry professionals to invest in Oklahoma’s groundwater and environmental workforce.
