H.R. 2353, Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act of 2017 advanced through the House Education and Workforce Committee on May 17.

The legislation reauthorizes the Perkins Act, which expired in 2012, and aims to close the skills gap between students and workforce needs. The bill will also give states flexibility in tailoring technical education programs to the needs of particular states or local communities. Similar legislation passed the House in the 114th Congress.

The bill passed the committee unanimously, building momentum for floor consideration.

Updating the authorization for programs supporting career and technical education is an important step in addressing skills gaps for workers in technical fields, like those in the groundwater professions.
